Parental Support Person


Full-time contract ending December 2022 with the possibility of extension

Three-week rotating schedule (below schedule subject to change):

Week 1: Five days live-in full time

Week 2: One six-hour day shift; Four days live-in full-time weekend shift (Friday-Monday)

Week 3: Off

Employees may also be required to work up to an additional eight scheduled hours each three-week cycle to attend to other operational requires, including team meetings and training.

We provide quality clinical, navigation and professional support in the areas of autism, behavioural, developmental, mental health, and rehabilitative services.



Hands is seeking the skills, experience and the significant commitment of a Parental Support Person for our Community Home residence to provide care and support to children/youth with complex special needs living in the home.

Reporting to the Manager of the Child and Youth Mental Health of Live-in Treatment Centre and Community Home, the Parental Support Person lives with residents in the home on a rotating schedule and is responsible for establishing a safe and supportive family environment that optimizes the growth and development of each resident. The Parental Support Person creates and monitors a family-like routine including the setting of boundaries, limits, and structure for residents.

As a mentor, the Parental Support Person works with the support team to implement an individualized service or care plan tailored to the needs of each resident.  The Parental Support Person works in partnership with the custodial parent to oversee all aspects of each resident’s growth and development.  The Parental Support Person is a member of the collaborative inter-professional team including community-based services and supports and the education system, as appropriate.



·         College diploma for Social Service Worker, Mental Health and Addictions, Child and Youth Worker, or equivalent.

·         Two (2) years related experience including supporting children and youth with complex needs and their families, preferably in a residential setting

·         Able to commit to live with residents for periods up to a full week, 24/7, during a three-week rotating schedule, appreciating the importance of consistency for the children and youth in care

·         Ability to create and foster a family-like environment including establishing boundaries, limits, and structure for residents

·         Demonstrated experience and expertise in providing support to children and youth with complex needs including involvement and mentoring of custodial parents and family/kin

·         Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of best practices as they are used within an individual service or care plan for a child or youth with complex special needs.  These may include mental health, behavioural, autism, or developmental disabilities services

·         Sound understanding of the continuum of care available for children and youth with complex special needs in Nipissing and Muskoka preferred

·         Ability to assess, plan and implement a personalized approach to service delivery within an inter- professional team providing care and case management

·         Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an inter-professional collaborative environment

·         Able to manage a household and all associated resources, including a vehicle provided by the agency

·         Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving and innovation skills

·         Commitment to lifelong learning

·         Proven flexibility and able to make a significant time commitment

·         Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety, with a willingness to contribute and lead in the culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events for clients and their families/caregivers, colleagues, other community members and yourself

·         Demonstrate ability and commitment to maintain confidentiality

·         Successful applicants will be required to provide:

o   proof of eligibility to work in Canada

o   a valid Ontario driver’s licence and use of a reliable motor vehicle; insurability on Agency vehicle insurance policy

o   clear Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search

·         Preference will be given to bilingual (French/English) candidates
