Strides Toronto is a multi-service agency providing a wide range of exceptional programs and services that improve the mental, social and physical health of infants, children and youth from the pre-natal stage to age 29, and their families. With a range of community, residential and treatment services our work helps to strengthen social and emotional well-being for culturally diverse clients to reach their full potential. We provide individual, group and family interventions that include mental health counselling, autism services, education, outreach and referral, early intervention, day treatment and community support. In its Lead Agency role, Strides Toronto collaborates with 23 publicly funded infant, child and youth mental health (ICYMH) core service providers to design and implement system-level improvements that promote access, responsive service delivery and experience, and positive mental health outcomes for young people and families across Toronto’s diverse communities. ABOUT THE ROLE
The Provincial Virtual Walk in Clinician provides immediate counselling support to children, youth, and their families. The role consists of providing mental health supports and an entry point for mental health services. The role also provides therapeutic support for resolving the presenting issue.
This is a remote role, providing virtual counselling and regularly scheduled evening and weekend work will be required.
Salary range: $32.00 to $38.00 per hour
Other: This role is a part of the OPSEU Local 567 bargaining unit.
Fully remote and will require to work evenings and weekends regularly.
There are 2 positions: 02 one-year part-time contract positions of up to 24 hours a week and 01 part-time permanent position of up to 24 hours, available.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Provide evidence informed counselling to clients and their families who maybe experiencing distress or who require mental health support with the intention of resolving the presenting issues or referring them to appropriate mental health resources or services.
- Assess level of risk for suicidal ideation and develop a plan accordingly using community-based interventions and medical services if necessary.
- Work in collaboration through an integrated care model with service navigators, and other service providers as necessary.
- Engage other family members to support client (if needed, with consent).
- Operate as a clinical team and provide regular peer to peer consultation to support clients’ immediate needs.
- Respond to crisis to address and reduce immediate risk to client, staff and/or community where a client may be at risk of harm to self or others (i.e., abuse, neglect, suicidal ideation, homelessness, aggression, self-harm, etc.).
- Complete administrative tasks to ensure comprehensive client services in the virtual walk-in.
- Complete record keeping in accordance with accreditation and legislative requirements.
THE “MUST HAVES”
The following education, professional memberships and knowledge are a requirement for this role:
- Degree or Diploma in a related field.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience providing brief/walk-in counselling services.
- Minimum of 2 years direct service experience, preferably within children’s mental health and transitional aged youth.
- Registration in a regulatory body in good standing, that is permitted to provide psychotherapy such as OCSSWSW and CRPO.
- Trained in an evidence model of therapy.
- SST training or experience or combination of both.
- Trained in Crisis Intervention and Prevention.
- Private space within a home office environment that includes appropriate safeguards in order to provide a confidential service.
- Awareness of the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and within the community being served by the position.
- An understanding of Anti-Black Racism, anti-oppressive/anti-racism perspective in the context of the social determinants of health when working with clients and their families.
- Ability to recognize and identify situations where incidents of and imbalance of power and privilege may occur and can result in possible negative impacts for the client.
THE ‘NICE TO HAVES’
- While not required, preference will be given to candidates with the following:
- Demonstrated experience working with youth and communities from diverse backgrounds including working with indigenous populations.
- Knowledge of the province of Ontario’s regions, cultural differences and resources.
- Experience with chat counselling and other forms of virtual counselling
- Experience working in or with community mental health agencies
- Knowledge of the cultural diversity of communities served by the agency.
- Fluency in another language(s), including sign language.
BEFORE STARTING WITH US
- As our work puts us in direct contact with young people and vulnerable persons in our community, with health and safety as a priority, the successful candidate must complete or obtain the following before commencement of their employment:
- Full vaccination against COVID-19 or have received an exemption from the organization’s policy.
