The Garry Hurvitz Center for Community Mental Health at SickKids (GH-CCMH) is a child and youth mental health center integrated with the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). GH-CCMH is also a member of the Thriving Minds Mental Health Access Collaborative with CAMH and SickKids and a core service provider in the Toronto sector of infant, child and youth mental health services funded by the Ministry of Health. GH-CCMH provides prevention, early intervention and health promotion services across the city, funded by MOH and other sources. As such, the Center has an ambitious agenda to provide the highest quality, evidence-based care, offering a range of services from prevention and early intervention to counseling and therapy, assessment and intensive supports. Services are offered in person and in virtual format. We are currently seeking applicants for the full-time regular position of a Youth Outreach Worker. The successful candidate will provide youth outreach services to clients.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Youth Outreach Services
- Provides youth outreach services by building trusting relationships with youth through consistent engagement and support
- Promote assets, competency and resiliency with a focus on youth with disabilities, newcomer youth, aboriginal youth and youth from diverse communities
- Provides outreach in schools, community spaces as needed/required
- Mentors, counsels and advocates for youth to encourage social inclusion and increase life skills capacity
- Empowers youth to take actions on issues affecting their lives and connects youth to community services/resources
- Facilitates life skills workshops, support group and recreational groups
- Collaborates with community partners, maintaining strong relationships
- Attends meetings with community-based organizations
- Makes decisions related to the day-to-day treatment and intervention techniques for clients referring unusual and unique situations to the Supervisor or Manager
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, best practices and legislation
- Makes decisions related to intake eligibility and services, including outside agency referrals, within guidelines and policies, as well as refers unusual situations to the Manager

- Complies with the organization’s vision, policies and procedures
- Performs other tasks as assigned by management
Qualifications
- Post-secondary Diploma in Child and Youth Care and a minimum of three years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Membership in the Ontario Child and Youth Care Association or relevant professional accrediting organization
- Good verbal and written communication skills to support and manage clients
- Good problem-solving skills to analyze client issues, recommend solutions and deal with crisis situations
- Demonstrated ability to work with at-risk youth, community partners and youth organizations
- First Aid/CPR, CPI and/or UMAB an asset
- Good knowledge of MS Office Suites (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as ability to use office equipment efficiently (telephone, scanner, photocopier and fax)
- Ability to incorporate values of a culturally competent practice of diversity and inclusiveness in all aspects of work
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, and travel to client appointments/sessions
Working Conditions
- Works in a pleasant office environment including off-site locations
- Exposure to isolation, lack of privacy and out-of-town travel affecting personal or family lifestyle and hearing difficult information about client experiences
- Some exposure to hazards such as working in high-crime communities, bodily fluids and contagious diseases
