The Marketing and Communications Manager will provide important strategic leadership and oversight of Strides Toronto’s brand and voice, including supporting the organization’s role as Lead Agency for the child and youth mental health sector in Toronto.  The Manager is responsible for leading, planning, developing, implementing, and managing mission-aligned internal and external communications and marketing strategies that foster strong client, community partner, staff, and donor engagement.

Strides Toronto is a multi-service agency providing services to young people from birth to age 29 and their families in East Toronto. Formed in January 2020 through the amalgamation of Aisling Discoveries and East Metro Youth Services, Strides Toronto provides a range of community, residential and treatment services to improve the mental, social, and physical health of infants, children, youth and their families. We provide individual, group and family interventions that include mental health counselling, autism services, education, outreach and referral, early intervention, day treatment and community support.

As Lead Agency for infant, child and youth mental health in Toronto, Strides Toronto works with 25 core service providers to design and implement system-level improvements that transform access to services, experience of services and the mental health outcomes for Toronto’s diverse communities.

Strides Toronto has a budget of $30 million and more than 350 employees providing services out of 19 locations across East Toronto. The organization Is accredited by the Centre for Accreditation and the predecessor organizations have a long history of providing high-quality services in East Toronto.

What will you do?

Create, implement, and measure the success of a comprehensive marketing, communications and public relations program that will enhance Strides Toronto’s programs and partnerships.
Facilitate internal and external communications with key stakeholders (e.g., government, community partners, clients, and media).
Raise the profile of Strides to ensure that all who need our services have access to them and of the Lead Agency in its system planning role.
Lead the planning, managing and delivery of all Strides marketing and communications including development and oversight of associated budgets, communications and public relations activities and materials including publications, media relations, digital marketing, etc.
Develop goals for the organization’s annual operational plan related to marketing communications functions and provides input into the plan as a whole.
Develop, design, produce, and distribute a variety of original print and digital communications materials (e.g., web content, presentations, promotional materials, key messages) to support the implementation of numerous internal and external projects.
Develop, coordinate and oversee use of tools, templates to support Strides services and in its Lead Agency role in government relations, crises communication, public speaking and other materials that assist management in the marketing, communications and positioning of their activities.
Write and edit content for both traditional and digital platforms to share and promote Strides activities, objectives, impact, and overall brand.
Evaluate marketing and communications initiatives and identify opportunities to strengthen communications.
Lead the development of Strides annual report (print and digital), which includes working with designers to develop the concept, coordinate photography, then determining the story line-up, writing, and proof-reading all content, managing production and executing promotion of the report.
Outside the organization, build media presence, coordinate media relations for Strides Toronto. This includes appropriately responding to media requests, liaising with third-party vendors/consultants, building and maintaining relationships at major outlets, crafting pitches, and conducting outreach, drafting media releases, and proactively pursuing the placement of articles and pieces through online and traditional channels.
Oversee interactive strategies, including the design of the Strides websites and content management of two affiliated sites, as well as the planning and use of social media to engage Strides’ key audiences to broaden the reach of the programming and partnerships.
Investigate and coordinate response to complaints or feedback related to communications.
Recruit, hire and orient staff; promote and/or transfer staff; assign, review and evaluate work; establish work goals and objectives and carry out performance appraisals; review and revise job descriptions; ensure that qualifications, technical skills and knowledge are maintained to meet job requirements.

What are we looking for?

A degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or other related field combined with five to eight years of directly related work experience required in communications.
Two to three years supervision and management experience.
Superior editing and writing skills in English; skilled in translating complex information into easy to understand and interesting language.
Knowledge of best practices in marketing, website, newsletters, and blog writing.
Knowledge of best practices in internal communications including how to engage staff and potential volunteers.
Knowledge of such programs and platforms as Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva, InDesign, Mailchimp, Eventbrite, WordPress, etc.
Demonstrated understanding of access and equity issues; and awareness and sensitivity to diversity in the workplace and within the community.
Experience in fostering excellent relationships with media.
Experience with the fundamentals of digital and social media for creating and publishing creative content on multiple platforms
Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, project management (from conception to completion) and planning skills.
Fluency in a second language is an asset.
